Sizing up the AL East (New York)

There is power in the Bronx, but while the Yankees may hit more home runs that the Sox, but the Yankees may struggle to get the rest of their aging lineup on base to score runs in front of the power hitters.

Mark Teixeira is by far their most significant addition as his reputation for hard work is well known throughout the league.  Tex is a huge improvement over Giambi because not only is he a durable power threat, but he also provides great defense at first base.   CC Sabathia will play well because of the offense will give him the run support to win ballgames.  But Sabathia’s second half numbers last year were inflated by playing in the National League and he can’t be expected to duplicate those statistics in the American League East.  He struggled in the first half of the season and he has a history of mediocrity in the postseason.

The Yankees look good on paper and, because of this and their team history, they’re supposed to win; they’re expected to win World Series.  But this is the expectation every year and they haven’t won a championship in eight years.  They have the talent so the biggest issue that could hold them back is clubhouse chemistry.  Large paychecks can cause rifts in the clubhouse and handcuff the success of a talented team.

They have the talent, but this team doesn’t instill fear like the Yankee teams of the past.  The acquisition of AJ Burnett was a big risk, the lineup looks old, and the AL East is more competitive than ever.

The AL East is going to be an unbelievably tight contest this year. I agree with your opinion on Sabathia too, there is no way he puts up those same numbers. He’ll be good, but no Cy Young award-esque performance.
