Retiring My Number

Please join me at Fenway Park on Tuesday, July 27  where, I am honored to announce, that my jersey number 14 will be retired.

It brings me great joy, on the same level as the induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, to have my number hang alongside Red Sox greats such as Williams, Yaz, and Pudge.

I have known for a couple of weeks now, but the team has finally allowed me to release this information.  Sorry if I did not reply to your emails.

I am glad the Red Sox are finally retiring your #14. You should have been in the HOF a long time ago. You were the most feared hitter in the AL during your playing career. I just loved to watch you hit….

    Jim,

Tuesday is July 28th. I cannot wait! You have been my all-time favorite baseball player. I’m actually flying up from Naples, Florida for your retirement night at Fenway!! You may not remember this, but my brother and I hired you to sign autographs at our Sports Card and Memorabilia show in Danvers, Massachusetts on August 18, 1991. George Scott introduced you to us. The fans and I were so excited to meet you that day!

I’m very happy for you and your family. You are a Red Sox and MLB Legend. Thousands upon thousands of players have come and gone in the Major Leauges. This Sunday, the entire world will be thinking about two..and you are one of them!! Great job Jim!

    Congratulations!

This is long long over due… as is your induction to the HoF. I know they both go hand in hand according to the Sox but it is also quite an honor. Nobody should ever wear #14 as a Red Sox player aside from you. Enjoy the all the accolades and cherish the moments this upcoming weekend. You deserve this more than anyone.

  8. Scott Downer says:

Congrats Jim. Well earned. Much desearved!

  9. Pete says:

Hi Jim - congrats on #14 being retired! I was hoping to make the trip from Ireland, but the delayed announcement by the front office did not leave me enough time to book the flight. We’ll be watching on TV from Dublin when #14 goes up right between Ted Williams’ #9, and Pudge’s #27. That’s great company!

  10. Tami Goodstein says:

Jim - I loved watching you play and I am so glad that you are finally receiving the recognition that you deserve. I really wish I could be at Cooperstown with you today to share the special event. You make every member of The Nation proud. I’ll be thinking of you.

  14. Tom Chase says:

    Jim,

My family and I had the distinct pleasure to see you get your number retired at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. What a thrill for all of us! As a kid who loved playing ball, I watched you throughout your career with the socks. I always was impressed with the intensity that you brought to the game whenever you were on the field and that you let your play do your talking. That to me is a sign of great leadership! Congratulations on both the Hall of Fame induction and on having your number retired. I also want to state that I think you’ve developed into a fine commentator and I enjoy hearing your insights and perspective on the game. Best Regards, Tom Chase from Barkhamsted, CT.
